Wireless Internet providers play the hoops arena name game

At the start of every basketball game you watch this season, you’ll hear the commentators begin the telecast with something along the lines of, “We’re coming to you live from the (insert name) Arena in (insert city and state)! It’s a common opening line, and has become the norm for most televised sporting events.

In recent years, wireless Internet providers have really increased their role in the title sponsorship of basketball arenas. Here are a few basketball venues that you might here about this year, with some names that are familiar to the wireless internet world:

The Verizon Center

Location: Washington, D.C.
Teams: Washington Wizards, Washington Mystics, Georgetown Hoyas

Time Warner Cable Arena

Location: Charlotte, NC
Team: Charlotte Bobcats

The Comcast Center

Location: College Park, MD
Team: Maryland Terrapins

The AT&T Center

Location: San Antonio, TX
Teams: San Antonio Spurs, San Antonio Silver Stars

In addition to these arenas currently in use by specific teams, the Sprint Center in Kansas City, MO is a state of the art arena with the infrastructure to support an NBA team. They currently hold tournaments and other events there.
